Space Savers On-Street Exhibition

It's almost here! Space Savers On-Street Exhibition will take place this
Saturday all over Philadelphia. Looking forward to visiting the artists
setting up near my location on 10th and Moore. But I hope to stay near my
installation most of the day. This is the flyer which I'm putting in my
neighbors' mailboxes.

It is a Philadelphia tradition to save your parking space with whatever you
can find; old tires, recycling bins, boards, traffic cones, etc. Often
these are found in assemblage combination. This sculptural effect is part
of what inspired Christopher McManus to hold this exhibition in conjunction
with David Clayton at Breadboard. My piece, TABLE, is constructed out of a
door and two bins that look like recycling bins. Together they form a table
that creates a space for neighbors to congregate. I wanted to do something
that would bring people together, rather than making them angry at one
another for not playing fairly. It's a very interesting social phenomenon
here in Philly. I wanted to to take this phenomena of urban decay and tweak
it in the direction of regeneration.

Looking forward to the other pieces by the rest of the artists and the
coverage that is supposed to be in the press. There is already some great

I had the pleasure of working very intensely for one week on a bench design/build competition. The competition was held through Design Philadelphia. I led a great OLIN team; Michael Cheney, Chris Hanley, Henry Moll, and Laura Rennekamp. We created digital files that were then milled on the ShopBot at NextFab, a wicked cool fab lab here in Philly. Special thanks to Lewis Colburn from NextFab for all his help and OLIN for giving us this opportunity. Look for the bench this week if you are going to be going to any Design Philly or Philly Works openings/events/shows.

I've had a busy couple of days! I'm helping to lead a small OLIN team to
design and build a bench for a Design Philadelphia competition. We are doing
it in less than a week! It's been incredibly exciting. I'll post more once
we have submitted our bench. This is one of my colleagues, Michael Cheney,
cleaning up a piece that we milled on the ShopBot at NextFab.

Goodbye iPod, Hello iBolt

There has been a lot of talk that today will see the demise of the storage-rich iPod Classic. After ten years this device has changed computing. If it did go away, it would be replaced by the iPod Touch. But the iPod Touch only carries 64 Gb, as is, and the Classic holds up to 160. There may be a lot of sad people out there after today's presentation. Or maybe not so many.

But, I could see Apple introducing a small, wifi/thunderbolt hard-drive called iBolt. Perhaps it's really small, but it holds, say 300 Gb. It connects to your computer with a Thunderbolt connection and with your portable devices using some kind of AirPlay via wifi, maybe Bluetooth.

It solves the capacity problem for people who need a lot of storage. Just an idea.

The new Claes Oldenburg sculpture is being installed as we speak. I'm on location taking photos and videos. It's all quite a todo. I got involved in the project a few years ago. I started doing some conceptual renderings for David Rubin at OLIN. I've done most of the renderings since. They've been featured in the Wall Street Journal (Today), Philadelphia Inquirer, uwishunu and more. But right now, it's just exciting and surreal to see it all coming together.

"Square Wave proposes to transform the Gowanus into an aqua-boulevard of
interconnected space that is ecologically engaging and socially connective.
It aims to transform this once toxic industrial scar into a vital urban
corridor and promenade. The revitalized watershed will reach deep into
neighborhoods, alerting residents and visitors of its beckoning presence.
New viewsheds and vistas composed of existing industrial structures and
historic ecological elements will be made possible by reimagining the
canal’s hard and soft edges.

The redesign is composed of three major steps:
Step 1 - Reshape the Canal's Basin by dredging and capping the soil both in
the canal and in newly created parks. An undulating shore of locally
produced concrete pixels will will serve as a cap and create a dynamic
waterline that encourages the growth of oysters along the canal edge.

Step 2 - Redirect stormwater along surface runnels to the canal rather than
combining it with sewage. Incentivize permeable and green surfaces in the
area. These interventions will intercept the water before it causes overflow
of sewage into the canal.

Step 3 - Provide bridges and walks along the canal to create new connections
to the surrounding neighborhoods and reinvigorated environment. New
businesses will emerge to serve the influx of visitors in this exciting
urban space."

Now that the iPhone and iPad are genuine post-PC devices, we can expect things to get weird fast. Weird and wet. Apple has been hinting at the idea of getting a little wet with their iOS 4 desktop and new iOS 5 logo. Here's how Apple will submerge the competition with the next generation of iDevices.

No Buttons

Apple likes to simplify whenever possible. And they have been toying with a few ways to do this. First is Multifinger gestures. On the iPad, this makes the home button essentially obsolete in almost every case. It could also remain, but only as a touch sensor.

All the other buttons are a certainly a mystery, though, but one could imagine them being waterproof without too much effort.

No Cords

Apple is cutting the cord. This would be easy enough to do with data now that they sync everything over the air. But what about power. There are a lot of ways this could work. For example, USB's already only charge when the signal is detected.

Macbooks use a handy dandy magnet to keep the cord connected.

And the rise of induction-method charging could also close the gap. Charging might even be achieved with the headphone jack...

Headphone Jack

Sealing the headphone jack is a tricky. Oh wait... maybe it's not. Supposedly the iPad2's headphone jack is already waterproof! Well well.

Goodbye buttons, goodbye cords, goodbye, goodbye. Welcome to the screen, the computer, the living image, that goes anywhere.

Seems that Apple has missed the boat in a lot of ways with iOS4.

Here are some solutions that Apple should use. Most of these are jailbreak options in some form already. Maybe so many people wouldn't be jailbreaking their phones if Mr. Jobs paid more credence to jailbreak trends.

Gestures
First and formost, this has been a huge missed opportunity. It could be very easy to become a power user with gestures. Open and close apps with gestures, exit folders; reduce the number of times you have to click, double click, press, hold, and fondle the home button - swipe, pinch, two finger gestures, more, more. There is so much they could do with their multitouch that is not happening here. They are under estimating the nimble fingers of their users. At least make it an option for those who are power users, please.

Examples: swipe left or right to close a folder. Swipe up to delete a running app from the multitask bar. Swipe diagonally across the full screen could be a second alternative to pressing the home button. two finger swipe across the screen to launch the app of your choosing.

Skins
Why can't I customize my Folder icons!? They all look the same. Let me customize the interface colors like in the Kindle app. White text on a black background, anyone? The home screen image is great. Thank you… for throwing us a bone.

Lock Screen
There is a lot that could be done with that worthless lock screen. Better notifications, calendar, news, mail, sms. Some argue this would not be very secure. Give people the option at least. Like with the Lock Code.

Multi-What?
Which apps are really doing what and when do they stop doing it? Why? Give us a real, full screen multitasking app that shows what's running. In fact, call it Intersection. It will show what is running (not just what you've done recently, but that could be an option too!). It will show what tasks it is running. Oh, Pandora isn't running audio, because iPod is, well let's close it. Say, mail is always running, interesting. My GPS is being used by three apps?!

There it is. I can't imagine any of them will come to us soon. Now I'm going to try to do something constructive with my day.
